WILL IT BE A HAT-TRICK
FOR WEYMOUTH THIS YEAR?
Congratulations to John Simpson of Weymouth Moviemakers.
We here at Exeter Films have just read the latest news that John
has taken over as Competition Officer for SoCo.
We wish him the very best of luck.
But will he make it a hat-trick?
After all, for the last two years the SoCo organisers have allowed
entries from outside the SoCo region. One entry from outside the
region even won the top prize.
We're all waiting to see if this happens again.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday 5th January 2018
Considering all the mess that the SOCO committee has
made in organising its film competitions during 2016, we would
have thought that the committee would have been more
careful when allowing (yet again) more entries from outside
the SOCO region in its competitions during 2017 last year.
So is it now time for all the SOCO committee members to call
it a day and resign?
We certainly think so.
We've never had an apology from the SOCO committee members,
they've just kept very quiet about all the cock-ups they've made.
We have written to the SOCO committee many times during 2017
and have never received a reply.
Is this the way to run a committee?

SOCO COMPETITION
TO BE RENAMED
TO BE RENAMED
Don't forget that next year (2018),
the SOCO competition including (Dolphin, Baby Dolphin, Top Of The Clubs,
and the Regional competition) is to be renamed:
"SOCO, OR ANY OTHER CLUB IN THE IAC THAT WOULD LIKE TO ENTER
A FILM" COMPETITION.
and please remember it's the same rules as last year.
If you'd like to enter a film, you can now belong to any region in the IAC,
and not just the SOCO region.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well that's what the SOCO committee has allowed for the past
two years, so why not carry out this tradition into the future?

ANOTHER BALLS-UP
has been made inside the SOCO Committee,
for the second year in a row.
We are at a loss here at Exeter Films to know why the organisers of
The SOCO Regional Competition do not seem to know which clubs
are in the SOCO region.
More will be revealed tomorrow.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last year we wrote:
SO IS THIS THE BIGGEST STITCH-UP SINCE THE BAYEUX TAPESTRY?
We have discovered corruption, dishonesty, and secrecy going on within the SOCO committee.
Would someone on the SOCO committee explain why they allowed a SERIAC film into the 2016 'TOP OF THE CLUBS' competition?
The rules (we think) clearly state that this SOCO competition is open to only, err, um, members or clubs in the SOCO region.
So is there something that the SOCO committee is not telling us?
We'd love to know.

Why is the SOCO committee being so nasty to us here at Exeter Films?
You may not like what we write, but you all know that what we write is true.
If it isn't, why hasn't the committee said something or contacted us about this?
And why doesn't the committee come clean about all this and admit that they've
made a complete cock-up of the whole thing.

SUSIE WALKER BUYS NEW CAMERA
SUSIE WALKER BUYS NEW CAMERA
Susie Walker has finally bought a new camera. She now realises that it's time to move on to High Definition, and she believes that this new camera will do the trick.
Well, that's what Jessops told her.
"I've been using the Sony DSC-HX90 for quite a few years now, but I felt it was time to move on."
She explained to us here at Exeter Films.
"This new camera which I've just bought has a much larger sensor, and more importantly, a much bigger viewfinder than the Sony, which makes all the difference when I come to arranging and composing my shots."
"It's also far more sturdy than my Sony."
She also added.
"The price of this new camera includes a hefty tripod, and I've ordered a gorilla to go with it, and hold it for me."
"There's no going back to a small camera now."

Wednesday 17th May 2017
Since last writing, it has been an action packed few weeks for me.
Several months ago I was contacted by Mike Snelling, the secretary
of Mid Wilts Video Society, inviting me to present an evening of my
films at Paxford Mead Community Centre in Hilperton near Trowbridge
in Wiltshire on their club night, Monday 10th April.
I was very pleased to accept, and thus proceeded to compile a full
evening’s entertainment including twenty short films I had made.
These films covered a wide range of subjects; holidays, documentaries,
experimental, wildlife and nature.
This nature section also featured the multi award winning film
‘Susie the Spider’ and, ‘Isn’t Nature Amazing?’ which won
1st place in the Wildlife/NaturalHistory category at this year’s
Frome Five Minute Festival.
Mike and his club members made me feel very welcome, and it was
an extremely enjoyable evening. Amongst the crowd that attended,
it was nice to see visiting members from nearby Devizes Video Club,
some of whom I had met on a previous visit.
Obviously all film-makers benefit from learning good editing skills
and techniques, so I made sure that I brought along over a dozen
books on the subject for members to have a look through and discuss
during the interval.

I think it is very heartening to be able to share your work and experiences
with others. More clubs should be encouraged to invite guest speakers
from other areas to give a talk about their films.
Why not make a compilation of your members’ best films and exchange
them with another club in your area? It’s a good way of finding out what
other film-makers are doing, and you may gain a few ideas for future
projects along the way.
So if you are planning a holiday in the UK this summer, why not check
out the IAC website to find a club near where you are staying, and pop
in and say hello.
You may be surprised where it could lead.
If you would like to contact me about your club and what plans you have
made for the coming year, please contact me via the Contact Us page,
which you'll find on this website.
Until next time, happy filming,
You can see a selection of my other films on

The rules (we think) clearly state that this SOCO competition
is open to only, err, um, affiliated clubs in the SOCO region.
So is there something that the SOCO committee is not telling us?
We'd love to know.

Two things to let you know about.
EXETER PHOENIX 48 HOUR FILM CHALLENGE
THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE NAUGHTY
Before you view it, and to understand our problem a bit better,
our brief was to produce a three minute film within 48 hours.
The genre was a western.
The film had to be under 3 minutes in length.
We had to include a lightbulb in the film, and
We had to include the line of dialogue,
'Hide them well.'
So, if you'd like to see our film,
please copy and paste this link
https://vimeo.com/user43038347
Please let us know what you think.
Many thanks.

Christmas Party
Thanks to everyone who turned up at our Exeter Films Christmas Party.
It was a great success, and we are so pleased that Yvette enjoyed receiving
her X award. For those of you who weren't there,
some photos will be published soon.

For those of you who have been a bit worried about us at Exeter Films,
we've been hibernating over the past month or so. Some of our friends have gone out and bought themselves new camera equipment over Christmas. Please take a look at our 'Picture Gallery' page, and let us know what you think. We did recommend something a bit smaller, but some people seem to think 'the bigger the better.' ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Please take a look at our Films Page. BEST EDITING AWARD We would like to congratulate Susie Walker, one of our friends here at Exeter Films, for scooping the best editing award for her film ‘Flog It’ in the recent annual SoCo Regional Competition 2015. Her film was placed third overall, which is a remarkable achievement. Susie made this film on her own using just a tiny Sony Handyman and simple Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 editing software. Digital Film Maker Issue 27 has just been published.
There are two very interesting articles.
On page 24 you'll find a rare article (rare for this magazine that is) about sound.
Only it's not about sound, it's just a moan (quite justified) across 6 pages as to why
DSLR cameras lack a decent microphone socket. So if you want to learn something
about sound recording, then don't bother buying this issue.
There is also an interesting article that's worth reading and that's about a short film director.
Yes you've guessed it, he's 167cm tall. He makes great films, and this article is well
worth reading.
On page 38 of the magazine, you'll see a photograph of a sound recordist
at work. More about this next time.
Please have a look at an article written by one of our friends.
It's all about Film Judges and Film Judging. Let us know what you think.
You'll find it on our Archive page.
It's called HEARING LOSS.

We've been very busy here at Exeter Films.
During September, two of our members went off to Wiltshire to make a short film
about the Kennet & Avon canal near Devizes and at the same time made a visit to
three IAC clubs in 5 days.
The three SoCo clubs were (obviously) Devizes, Mid Wilts, and Trowbridge.
Unfortunately Trowbridge was in the middle of an EGM so we couldn't stay, but it was
very nice to see how other clubs operate in the SoCo Region. Needless to say, we were
made very welcome at each club.
We are also now involved in Teignmouth's new film drama 'The Deal.'
We'll let you know when it's going to be released. At this very moment,
It is being edited and sound mixed.
In the meantime, have a look at a picture of the film crew. you'll find it
on our 'Picture Gallery ' page.
Yes it's been a very busy and pleasurable September.
The weather's been good too.

CHRISTMAS IN A DAY
Christmas In A Day is a peep into the homes of families up and down the country at Christmas.
Christmas in a Day is a beautifully moving document of who we were on 25th December 2012.
Created by Academy Award-winning director Kevin Macdonald and Scott Free Productions,
the film presents one of the few moments in the calendar when the whole nation steps back
from ordinary life.
And guess what, two of our members have contributed to this film and were two of the
117 people in the country to have had their clips used in compiling this extraordinary little film.
It was premiered at BAFTA in London on Thursday 29th November 2013 and has now
been released on Youtube.
It's already had over 290,000 hits in the first two days of release.
And as I update this figure on Thursday 19th December 2013, there have now been just
over 1,000,000 (that's one million) hits.
Here is the link to their bit which is about 23 mins and 50 seconds into the 48 minute film.

on Wednesday 25th September 2013.
These films were chosen by members of a jury who included a former distribution executive
with 20 years in the business as well as a BAFTA nominated film director, so WELL DONE US.
There will even be a Chagford Golden Globe for BEST DEVON FILMMAKER. We'll let you
know the result of that, as soon as we find out.
The programme of films lasted about an hour and a half. There were several screenings
throughout the day, and were held at the Globe Cinema, Globe Inn, Chagford.
September marked the 3rd Chagford Film Festival and ran from Monday the 23rd to Saturday
the 28th of September.
Many thanks to everyone who turned up to see our films.

RODE MICROPHONES
One of our members recently bought a Rode Lavalier (tie clip) microphone. The funiest thing is that she found this warning sticker wrapped around the microphone cable. We'd never seen this label before. Perhaps it's only issued in Australia where the microphone comes from.
Sorry about the tilt. We'll correct this error as soon as possible.

Actually there was no error, it was just an optical illusion. Clever isn't it?

The Digital Filmmaking Handbook
Sunday 12th May 2013
The Digital Filmmaking Handbook has just come out.
It's £9.99 for 224 pages. A wonderful book for beginners
or anyone who just wants to read about the latest
techniques and equipment.
This is another book we can highly recommend.
Just like The Film-Maker's Handbook which you first saw
on our website in January 2013. It was finally reviewed in
FVM magazine in the June 2013 edition.
It's nice to know that the IAC and the FVM magazine have acknowledged Exeter Films as a good source of information.
